Bella Does Nepal

I still can't believe I'm in Kathmandu.

Nothing like just showing up and saying 'entertain me....NOW'.

I got here on Monday afternoon and had a hotel taxi pick me up. Of course he was accompanied with a tour guy. They are everywhere here. Selling all sorts of adventures in Nepal.

I'm staying in an area called 'Thamel'. A little town where the foreign visitors outnumber the local Nepalese. The total area of this place is aprx 3 square kilometers with 8 entrances towards it and Thamel holds more than 2,500 businesses including hotels of different standards, lodges, guest houses, resturants, massage centres, discos, pubs, dance restaurants, souvenir shops etc.,

I checked into Hotel Diplomat............$7.00 a night- single room/private bath...............and then headed out with Fani to see what he had to sell me.

The guy is a master at this.

Tomorrow I am going with a private guide to the Annapurna area.

My itenary:

  • Take the 7 am tourist bus to Lake Pokhara. Arrive at aprx 2 pm. Afternoon and evening free. I will be staying at the Fishtail Villa right in front of the lake.
  • May 1st...Drive from Pokhara to Naya Pu (aprx 1 hr) and then trek to Tirkhedhunga (aprx 4/5 hrs). Stay overnight at one of the tea house lodges.
  • May 2nd....Trek from Tirkhedhunga to Ghorapani (aprx 6/7 hrs). Stay overnight at one of the tea house lodges.
  • May 3rd...Get up at 4:30 am and climb from Ghorapani to Poon Hill (aprx 1 hr)...then walk back to Ghorapani to trek to Deo rali and Tadapani area (aprx 6 hrs). Stay overnight at one of the tea house lodges.
  • May 4th...Trek Tadapani to Ghandrung (aprx 3 hrs). Stay overnight at one of the tea house lodges.
  • May 5th...Trek Ghandrung to Naya Pu (aprx 4/5 hrs). Drive from Naya Pu to Pokhara. Relax that evening at Fishtail Villa.
  • May 6th...Full day and evening at Lake Pokhara. Stay overnight at Fishtail Villa.
  • May 7th...Take the tourist bus back to Kathmandu. Overnight at Hotel Diplomat.
  • May 8th...Free day and evening in Kathmandu.
  • May 9th...Fly back mid afternoon to Delhi

I'm going out for dinner with Fani and my guide tonight.

Today I had to buy some gear for my trip.

Life is great!

Change

'You must become the change you want to see.' Gandhi

Bored Bella

I'm waiting for Helen to go the pool.

We are going around 2 pm.

It's too hot to be outside so I'm stuck inside bugging the front desk guys.

They like it better when I concentrate on the computer.

This is why I'm blogging.

Facebook Friends

Vince...SIGN UP! I'll re-invite you again. It's very simple.
Even you can do it.

Anna....my cousin....SIGN UP! That way you can see some of my pictures. You can also give Dante his own profile and have him practice sending me messages.

Does Danteroo know how to write yet?

Elevator Music # 2

The hotel is trying to keep me quiet.

They now have Bryan Adams playing.

Not the real Bryan Adams.

Some cover band.

I'm a real Canadian and can tell the difference.

Life - Dreams = Jobs

I love that saying.

Indian Mail Rocks

My father just received my second mailed package!

Yipee!!

I've figured out that air packages take aprx 3 to 4 weeks to Canada.

Not bad.

Elevator Music

I'm sitting at one of the computers....there are two of them....by the front desk.

The computer next to me has music programmed on it, so I ask the guy at the front desk to please turn it on.

He does.

First he plays some religious stuff. I tell him I don't understand it. He tells me to just feel it.

Then the crap music comes on. Real elevator shit.

I ask him to please turn the elevator music off and play some good dance/chill out music.

First I had to explain what elevator music was and then I got a lecture on how dance/chill out music reflects poorly on the hotel as this is the front desk area.

All this from someone in his late 20's.

I now know that they are really really really going to miss me.

Killing Cockroaches

We had a huge cockroach in the bathroom the other day.

Helen was still sleeping so I didn't scream in case I woke her up.

I bravely took the shower thingamajigger that kind of looks like a bromb and tried to smack the big sucker.

I was jumping up and down while I was doing this. I have no idea why....I think it was to prevent it from running up my legs.

Cochroaches are fast.

And ugly. Really ugly.

I finally managed to squash it to death.

I even managed to pick up the pieces with the hard cardboard roll that is used inside the toilet roll.

Me so happy.

I was so happy that I had to report my killing to the guys at the front desk.

'I killed a cockroach in your bathroom.
It was huge.
Killing might be against your religion....but it's okay for me to kill.
I'm Catholic'.

The guys at this hotel (who are also the owners) think I'm retarded.

Today I'm wearing my new blue t-shirt that says CIAO BELLA.

I pointed this out to them when I ordered breakfast.

'HELLO.....I'm leaving today.'

The younger one smiles and says 'bye bye'.

I know they will miss me.

Nepal...Here I Come

I need to get out of this heat.

Kathmandu is only a 1.5 hr flight from Delhi.

I'm taking the overnight bus tomorrow to Delhi and then Jet Lite to Kathmandu.

My bus cost 460 rupees (less than $15.00).

My return flight was 9,300 rupees (less than $250.00).

Don't worry...I won't be going anywhere near Mount Everest!

Indian Travel Agents

My experience at a well know...world wide...travel agency last week.

Visit One:
  • I am shown to the agents desk by the armed guard. There are two agents side by side. One is busy. Both agents speak fluent English.
  • I inquire about flights/times/costs.
  • The agent answers them by typing stuff into the computer and getting schedules/costs.
  • I ask several times if there are any additional costs....'No, not when I book online' is her response.
  • I also inquire about using my credit card. She advises that no additional costs as this was being booked by them on-line. I even asked her several times to confirm this.
  • I decide on the date/time of the flight I want.
  • The agent then tells me that I need a paper ticket and that the agent next to her would be the only one that can issue this type of ticket.
  • No problem is my response. I'd only been there for about 30 minutes by then.
  • I now wait another 30 minutes for the other agent to come available.
  • During my wait time I ask the agent what rate she used for the Canadian $. Of course she made a mistake.....I had to correct both her and the currency exchange teller by explaining over and over what buy and sell mean. They both spoke fluent English.
  • Once in front of the agent I waited for... I tell her what I need.
  • Of course the price had changed by 'just 100 rupees more'.
  • No problem I say.
  • I take out my credit card.
  • The agent then tells me....'There will be a 1.3% additional charge for using your credit card'.
  • I immediately point to the agent next to her and YELL that I had verified that there would be NO additional costs.
  • The agent tells me- 'Yes, but only if I were to issue the ticket online- on this computer. You are now at the next computer and will be getting a paper ticket. There will be a charge.'
  • I grab my stuff and leave.

Visit Two:
  • I am shown to the couch as I need to wait for the agent with the computer that issues these paper air line tickets.
  • The other agent is just sitting there staring at me.
  • I wait and wait and wait. A good 30 minutes.
  • I am then asked to go sit in front of this agent.
  • The agent makes a few phone calls for my ticket.
  • She only uses the computer to misquote me a few prices.
  • The agent then tells me to wait 10 minutes as the ticket was being issued by another office and would be delivered.
  • I wait and wait and wait. A good 45 minutes.
  • During my wait time, the armed guard dropped his big rifle on the ground. Everyone just laughed. I almost had a heart attack. The gun was taller than you was. I'm sure he has no idea how to use it.
  • I pay cash for the ticket. At a lesser cost of 1,500 rupees due to me sticking firm with my questions/details of pricing.
  • I get the ticket and leave after being in the office for almost 1.5 hrs.
This transaction would of taken Heather...my good friend and travel agent....less than 5 minutes to issue.

This is India my friends.

Post Office Expert

I had a great trip to the post office today!

Usually a simple errand can take hours in India.

This morning...Saturday....I arrived at 10 am when the post office was opening.

This meant it really opens at 10:30 am....no line up's......as the local's know to not show up until it really opens..which is way after posted time.

Stitching and posting only took less than 30 minutes once I got served.

Yipee!!!

India Sucks You dry

Out of all the countries I've been to ....India....is the strangest.

If I were to write out a list of pro's and con's of why....the con's would way outnumber the pro's.

It's one of those countries that you either love or hate. No in-between.

It's a struggle everyday here.

Either to cross the street or just buy something simple without getting killed or ripped off financially.

I don't know why but it's gotten into my blood.

I love and hate it at the same time.

Tailors & Me- Part Two

Life is not good when going to a tailor that tells you to come back in one week and then tells you to come back the day after the day they were supposed to have everything completed.

AND......on that day you find out he hasn't even TOUCHED your material...let alone cut out the pattern!

Even with him telling me 'I stitch all night'.........I grabbed my material and left.

Candice was there at the same time yelling at him to get her stuff done...so I just had to get out of there.

Nothing is like it should be in this country.

I'm giving my material away to someone that understands that there are no deadlines or promises kept in this country.

Persistance

1. Refusing to give up or let go
2. Insistently repetitive or continuous

This is a big part of India's culture.

Some days you can handle it and some days you want to kill them all.

Litter Country

India's people love to litter.

Nothing goes into the garbage. It all goes on the ground.

Everything.

It's pretty disgusting in some parts.

This is the one thing I would love to change in this country.

STOP F----- LITTERING!!!!

Ambition & Motivation

Ambition has to be the product of motivation.

Why I'm Not Married

  • Marriage is sharing joys & problems together
  • Marriage is taking responsibility and not casting blame
  • Marriage is showing a partner courtesy & understanding
  • Marriage is love....LOVE- to a great extent is acceptance

Post Offices and Me

I mailed a 'book post' yesterday from the post office.

This is where you mail books back to you. A very cheap way to post stuff back to you.

I took my books to the parcel guy. He stitched up a a bag...with one side visible- so Canada customs knows what the parcel is.

I then went to the window that does parcels......didn't even stand in line....I'm an expert ...AND...I'm an Indian by now.

Aggressiveness in this country gets you places.

For only 80 rupees I mailed the parcel.

Hopefully it will arrive in the 2.5 months I was told it will take.

What can you expect for 80 rupees.........less than $3.00?????

Toxic Free Me

I went for a massage this morning.

My special treat in leaving Jaipur.

I tried another ayurvedic massage. 700 rupees.

The last time I had one of these I was in Varkala. This is where I got sick.... I think I was releasing toxic's from my body.

This time I'm fine.

My body is toxic free.

Goodbye Candice & Helen

Last night was our 'girls' night out.

We were going to go out for dinner but then got into the vodka and beer at our hotel.....you know how that goes.

All the girlie talk about sex, fashion, sex, fashion, sex and more sex was pretty funny.

We sure have great memories of our time in Jaipur!

I'm going to miss my entourage.

Walking Through Life

Sometimes you feel like you are walking through life with no one really knowing you at all.

Then there are times that people do really know who you are.

This is when life is great.

Bye Bye Didi Bella

Thursday was my last day at the vocational school.

I won't be hearing 'Didi Bella' anymore. I'm so sad.

It was a very emotional day.

The day started out as all the others....up around 8 am....took a quick shower and I put on my Rajasthan style kurta over my capri jeans.

Once I got to the school, Sarita and Kamlesh ran over to show me the completed poster I had them working on the day before. They made a sponsor info poster for the office. I was very impressed with what they did. I really wasn't too sure about Mickey Mouse being on the poster- but I didn't have the heart to tell them....so....I did what I had to do. I put it up on the wall in the office.

We had another Intrepid tour come for a visit, so I spent some time with the Leader- Ravi- and the passengers just talking about India.

Once the group left, Rupendra, Sheila and Kamala called me into the office and told me that Ladli would like to thank me for all my hard work and that they had a small gift from me.

Normally I would of been able to pick out some jewellry the girls made... however.... I had Sonerji design some silver ankle bracelets as well as some for my nieces...so they just gave me those as gifts and gave me a discount on the other necklace I had them make for me.

Then..........they had me go with them to the main work area the girls sit in and had me sit in the middle of the room on a chair. They then gave me a red bindi with rice and put a flower garland around my neck. They also gave me a red flower. Each time they gave me something they all clapped. I was sitting in the middle of the circle with all the girls and staff standing around me...all looking at me and smiling. They also had local music playing a song that they said had a strong message to it. Tulsi tried to explain it to me- but all I heard was something about a letter. The moments were so overwhelming that I was crying like a big baby. Even some of the staff and girls had tears in their eyes.

I tried to just think happy thoughts...but it was very hard.

I kept thinking about all the people I was leaving and what would happen to them.

What did the future hold for all these special people in my life?

This made me cry harder...so I stopped thinking this and gave everyone a hug before I left.

March 10th to April 24th... 7 weeks of my life shared with Ladli.

Didi Bella loved every moment.

Homeless Love Photo's

Most people I know do not like to have their photo taken.

If they do...they like to get ready and pose for it.

The homeless LOVE to have their pictures taken.

They also cause chaos in trying to rip it out of your hand when you actually print the photo's up and try to hand out.

Helen took over 400 pictures on our first visit and decided to have them developed to hand out to whomever was in the photo in our second visit.

Wow.

We needed body guards that day to control the frenzy we caused.

I'm pretty sure the street workers are so glad we are not going with them on anymore visits.

We've been very disruptive to their routine.

Street Kids Beauty Day

I forgot to comment on last Wednesday's beauty day for the kids.

Helen was cutting hair and managed to get to 3 kids before the lice was really really noticeable.

No more hair cuts after that.

I had no idea that lice was a light color and hung on the actual hair.

I thought they were black and hung around the scalp area.

Google verified.

Surviving the Heat

My god it's getting hot here!

At 7 pm it cools down to 32 celcius. Yup.

During the day it is 42 celcius.

They tell me that MAY is the month that it really gets hot.

This is just the start.

I'm surviving this as its a dry heat. No humidity.

I also go to McDonald's often.

It's air-conditioned.

Peace & Quiet

It was so quiet in Pushkar.

Everywhere else here in India has been very loud.

Very very loud.

Honk honk honk honk honk honk.

I'm going crazy with all the honking.

Why is this country so insane?

Gas Fumes

I'm at some cheesy internet shop.

All I smell are gas fumes.

I might die in here.

Desert Cell Phones

Cell phones work in the desert.

I know this because all our camel 'boys' each had one and used it often.

Candice also used hers to call her boyfriend in Norway.

Who would of thought this was possible.

Benny and the Camels

I went to Pushkar for the weekend with Candice.

We left on Friday morning....9:30 am bus to Ajmer ($121 rupees each) and then caught the Ajmer to Pushkar bus for 8 rupees. We arrived around 1:30 pm.

At Pushkar I called Benny to come pick us up. Vicky his brother came instead....I of course got confused (they look alike) and was going on and on about last time I was in Pushkar and how I was dragging the blanket around on the rooftop and that 'your' brother was mad at me. Vicky (who I thought was Benny) then decides to tell me it was him. 'I am not Benny'. Great. Welcome to Pushkar.

We hung around town....much quieter this time due to the heat. Watched the sunset and then went back to the rooftop to drink. It's illegal to drink in this holy town...but we brought our own vodka. We needed a drink or two or three..........

On Saturday we just hung around town and then headed off on our camels around 5 pm.

We were picked up right at our hotel! So cool to ride our camels through town into the desert.

We stopped after a few hours to watch the sunset and the entertainment that was planned for us. Dancers with live music. Awesome!!!

We rode a little bit further after that and then set up camp...basically this was our bed cots...with mattresses and sheets/pillow plus a blanket. Good thing as it got pretty cold out there at night!

Our dinner was fabulous and so was sleeping under the stars with a full moon.

I don't think life can get any better.

I Knew It

I knew it was Vince.

He is a female version of me.

We should of gotten married.

Anonymous..Who Are You

To my anonymous commenter.............

WHO ARE YOU?

You are very funny.

You must be related to me.

Tailors and Me

I went shopping the other day for material.

Candice is the expert in this.

I'm now getting a French designer dress made for Jr's wedding. Black.

I hope it works out.

The tailor is costing me 200 rupees. $5.00 Canadian.

Material cost $8.00. 3.5 meters.

I can also get one pair of pants and one short skirt made for an additional 300 rupees. $8.00.

Life is good.

Bored Me

I was sooooooo bored the other day.

I organized all the Hotels magazines.

They finally gave me permission to throw out anything prior to 2006.

I'm bringing those old old magazines to the kids.

Toilet Paper Shortage

It's totally insane here trying to get toilet paper!

Indians don't use toilet paper. Well...maybe not all of them....but most don't.

They know 'Westerners' do, yet the rolls of paper they give you at the hotel barely last one day. There is very little paper on the roll.

Everyday I ask for toilet paper.

This morning I had to remind them once again that Westerners use toilet paper ALL the time.

I've sometimes even said that Westerners get diarrhea in this country.

They just smile.

Matchmaker Me

I'm trying to get a few nice Indian boys married off with my matchmaking skills.

I've run into a few problems though.

The boys are not too willing and neither are the girls.

They don't think I know what I'm doing.

"You're not Indian" they say....and then tell me that their mothers or family members do this type of thing for them. People they trust and love.

People they must obey.

Ironing In The Heat

You see all the ironing shops out on the side of the street and wonder how hot it must be for them as they work.

They have a shade over them while they iron....but OMG!

They use these huge irons that are filled with burning charcoal.

Charcoal they have to light up on the sidewalk.

It's like I step back in time when I see this.

This is India.

I Want A Big STEAK

I'm craving a big juicy steak!

With loads of barbeque sauce.

Yummy.

Flattery or Craziness

The longer I work here the more I validate how much help this country really needs.

I've been working on this project of taking the girls pictures to make a profile page of them....age..how long at Ladli.....family/living situation and english/math skills. This project is to help future volunteers with the learning curve of the girls.

Rupendra came up to me today and told me that he too is now taking pictures of the girls to get an 'inventory' of who is there....similar to what I'm doing.

He says this with a smile.

I of course had to comment on that.

"WHAT?" "Why didn't you tell me this? I could just put the pictures I take on a CD for you!"

"Oh" is his response.

They say copying someone is a form of flattery.

The teachers have been doing it with my math style and now Rupendra.

Crazy Indians.

Bitchy Me

Man I can get bitchy living in this heat.

No comments on this please.

Interesting....It's Monday Now

Hmm.......

I've been sitting on this computer for over 3 hours.

Same day in India....but it shows that I started to blog on Sunday and it's now Monday.

I'm just killing time while loading photo's.

Maybe I'll try to do something else.

I'm bored and it's too hot to go outside.

They are installing an air conditioner in our room in the next few days.

Life is good.

Colors and Me

I found this magazine the other day in the Hotel and I got over excited!!!

I now am up-to-date on the entertainment news.

I'm also a color expert.

Purple: Mystical. Dreamers. Unconventional. Witty & moody. Secretive & seductive.

Blue: Peaceful. Even-tempered. Gentle. Loyal & discreet.

Green: Healthy. Generous. Caring and balanced.

Yellow: Innovative. Idealistic.

Orange: Extroverted. Expansive. Adventure lovers.

Red: Intense. Daring. Passionate.

Magazines are so informative.

Killing Time Multi-tasking

I can't believe how unorganized my Hotmail is!!!!!!!!!!

EEKS!!!

I'm taking the time it takes to load up all the photo's on Facebook to clean it up.

Just call me efficient in a country that's not.

Make Me Your Friend

If you are not on Facebook.........make me your friend!

I just posted a few photo's of my adventures.

Friends and More Friends

I've got over 100 friends on Facebook so far.

Me so happy.

Expensive Japan

I finally booked a hostel in Tokyo for my return back home.

I managed to find an 'inexpensive' place.

A 14 room.........capsule style.......is costing me only $45.00 a night.

Ouch.

Patient Me

I'm learning loads on computers here.

1. How to use a card reader.

2. How to use different card readers.

3. How to load pictures on facebook without java.

4. How to keep signing on to facebook over and over again to complete a task.

5. How to be patient.

Computer Dates

It's really Monday here...not Sunday like the computer says.

I'm not sure why they are all one day behind.

Another......'that's India' explanation.

Walking ATM's

That's what we are to most of the Indians here.

Walking ATM's.

Some more stupid than others.

Pool Days

Boy it's hot here now. I can't imagine what it's going to be like in the next few weeks!

I went to the pool once again with Candice on Sunday.

This is the same hotel pool we've gone to several times prior.

The first time we went it was 150 rupees for the full day...when Candice & I went on our own.

With the boys...David & Paul... it was 150 rupees per hour.

Yesterday it was 150 rupees for 2 hours.

We paid our 150 rupees and stayed for as long as we wanted.

They're crazy here with ripping off the tourists.

Loading Photo's

Today is another religious holiday of some kind so I didn't have to go into work.

I'm trying to upload photo's on facebook.

I've figured out I can multi-task.

Blog and upload.

Dancing With The Devil

The dancing spot we went to on Saturday was called the 'Devils' something at the Las Vegas Hotel.

The place was small and not busy at all. About 5 other people were there. All boys of course.

You don't see any women out unless they are part of a couple.

This is a very strange part of the country to party in.

Basically you can't unless you are a boy.

Threesome

I called up Monty on Saturday...this one guy I met at Ladli...tour leader with Intrepid... to take Candice & I out dancing. He lives in Jaipur.

We met up with him for dinner... then headed over to this local bar for a drink.

We drove to the local bar on Monty's motorcycle. All three of us.

That's quite common here.....they load the bikes up if they need to.

The driver is the only one required to wear a helmet.

Candice has not been on a bike here....so I made her go on the back. I rode in the middle. It's safer. I did not want to fall off.

This 5 minute ride turned out to be a bit longer. It was lightning out and I thought we were going to get hit by a bolt....then remembered that being on rubber is supposed to be the safest spot to be in when it's lighting out. I'll have to google that one day....but for now those are my thoughts.

Anyways....we didn't get hit by lightning.....BUT....it started to rain! Super big rain drops and it hit fast. Wow!

Another WOW was that we made it to our location within seconds that this happened.

The threesome laughed our way up the stairs to the local bar.

How cool was that?

Yes I'm really Here

Too bad I haven't used this blog to post pictures.

I might try doing this in the next day or two.

Or maybe this afternoon if I don't go to the pool.

Say NO to Activists

I've had enough of Oystein's thoughts and mission on life.

It didn't end that peaceful for him with the Director on Wednesday.

Oystein is trying to change the way Indians think and do business. Oh....and change rituals.

Yup.

He is on his way to Nepal right now.

Showers and Street Schools

Helen and I spent yesterday with the street school team...Kanta, Kavita, Sunil, Anil.

The day started with the four of them picking us up with the ambulance. They don't have a school bus driver...so the ambulance is used for everything.

The ambulance looks like one from the outside, but the inside is pretty plain....with side seats on each side. Four of us crowded in one side of the ambulance as the food containers were all on the other side.

After about 45 minutes in this hot crowded ambulance....we get there.

'There' is one of the slum area's.

The slums consist of tent like homes......roofs often made from plastic bags or sacks. It's a community- so they have kind of like streets separating the 'homes' and I also saw a little store in this one slum we were at.

We stop by a tree. There aren't that many of them in the area....so finding one for shade is good as it's super hot by now. We park.

Kids start running up to us as they are excited to see new people with the 'regulars'.

All of them want to shake your hand and yell 'HELLO". 'WHAT IS YOUR NAME?'

The teachers/health-care/social workers set up an area for school.

By now the kids are getting a little wild as Helen and I are taking pictures. Kids here LOVE their pictures taken. They then want to see it. Crazy time. This means you have to yell 'DO NOT TOUCH' over and over as the camera will then have hundreds of little fingers on it.

There must of been a good 50 kids at the first place we stopped. All dirty. All with mismatched clothes if they had any on. Most with no shoes. Snotty noses. Matted hair. YET....all of them were smiling. All of them were happy. It was so overwhelming to be there in the middle of it all. We even had the adults calling us over to their tents to visit with them. None of them spoke English...but we communicated with our smiles and our pictures. Good thing I have a digital now!

The kids at this school were between the ages of 4 and 12. They knew their ABC's and 1 to 10 in English. They also knew their names. Not much.

We didn't really do much with this first group as they then had to line up for their food. The line was pretty tame considering it was all kids with their small little bowls. Ones they have from home. Lunch was rice and a curry vegetable.

Anil was making sure only the kids that went to school stood in line and got some food as other people from the community tried to sneak in.

I would say that about 500 people lived in this first community.

We then made our way to the second spot. This is where Mukesti was waiting for us with his shower bus. It's really a truck pulling a water tank.

About 20 kids were waiting for their showers. Most had some sort of clothing on. There were a lot more women waiting to fill up their buckets/pails with the water.

Sunil made his way on the tank and just let the water go. Yippee! The kids went wild. After they managed to make themselves totally wet everyone made their way to Kanta and Kavita who poured some shampoo on their hair and gave them some soap. Wow! it got better after that. The water was going and the kids were yelling and having fun. I'm not sure how many of them actually cleaned themselves...but it was fun to watch!

After all the fun, the women got in line to get their water.

Our team then took a break by driving over to a park nearby to have our lunch. After a cup of chai, we made our way back to the spot the kids had their showers.

The school was another basic set up.....blankets under a tree for shade. Helen & I took over this class by singing 'Old Mcdonald' and having them each tell us their names. Counting and then ABC's. At one point I was asking the kids to 'teach me'. I wanted them to show me how to do something in their language. They all just stared at me and repeated 'teach me' to me. I couldn't stop laughing in front of the class.

I suck as a teacher. Anna....my dear cousin....I sure could use you here in India with the kids.

The kids got some food and then the teachers/health aid/social workers handed out some of the stuff Helen and I brought. Underwear. Boy do they like getting underwear. No embarrassment like our kids. They smile and hold up their new panties for a picture.

Our last stop was with a group of working kids. Right in the heart of the city. These kids work with their parents picking up garbage. They were totally filthy. I've never been that close to people so dirty. These kids carry big sacks and pick up recycle products. They also live on the street....so bathing and having clean clothes are not an option.

Their hair was a total mess. Their bodies were full of built in dirt. On the neck. On the arms. On their faces. Filthy. The clothes- what little they had on- hadn't been washed.....EVER. Most did not have underwear on. None of them had shoes.

This was where I had to take a couple of deep breathes......it was so shocking to think too hard on this life. A life that just repeats itself. A cycle of poverty. No water. No clothes. No shoes. No food. They beg on the street for what they live on.

The remarkable thing is that all these kids were smiling and laughing. All so very happy.

Kanata reminded us that all kids really want is love. That's all.

There were no showers or food for these kids....just some biscuits....that they had to line up for. Their three little biscuits each. It just broke my heart.

Helen and I are going back with the team on Wednesday.

Helen is going to cut their hair.

I am going to be the assistant.

One more thing to add to my resume.

Saving Rupees

I'll be moving out of my hotel to save a bit of cash. I'm presently paying 550 rupees a night ($14.00).

I'll be sharing a twin room with Helen... 600 rupees...aprx $8.00 each.

I need to save some money as I want to do a bit more travelling in the country during the month of May.

It's not really 'saving' money.

It's more like 'spending' less money.

I have to think this way when I'm living off a line of credit.

Eeeks.

Festivals and Gropers

Last night a few of us went into the old city to just hang out shopping.

Bad mistake.

There was a festival going on. The streets were full of people. It was very difficult to walk around.

Candice was getting her ass groped continually that we decided to walk in the street as part of the parade.

It's bad enough that the locals always stare at us...but now we are in a PARADE.

Yup.

It's a crazy country.

Butting In

The only way you can get stuff done in India is by butting in. Lines mean nothing.

My latest experience of this was when I went to the post office last week to mail another parcel. Oh- my last parcel ...the 'test'...did make it home with no problems. It took about one week longer than they said it would- but it arrived safely and with noone opening/inquirying about the contents. Yipee!!!

The main post office in Jaipur is within walking distance from my hotel....aprx 20 minutes of walking on the dangerous streets yelling 'NO' to all the tuk tuk's and rickshaws that cut you off to get some business.

I gave in half way and paid a bike rickshaw guy 20 rupees to take me down a few blocks. Most of the bike rickshaw guys are illiterate...but it was easy communicating with him as he saw my parcel...I just pointed to it and down the road...he knew where I needed to go.

Once there I had to get my parcel stitched up from the guy at the counter just outside the main post office area. 70 rupees and 15 minutes later I enter the main area. Chaos. I decide to stand in one line but then think I better ask someone. I go out to the guy that stiched up my parcel. He tells me to go to the counter at the end. I go and once again think I'm going nowhere there. The line was all men and then other men just going past the line and handing stuff over the windows. The people butting in were getting stuff done.

I go back to the stiching guy and ask him once more about this counter...is there another one that posts parcels. He laughs and talks to some otf the other guys that were just hanging around. They all laugh and look at me. Great.

He tells me that...You. Tourist. Lady. Give. Over. Window. No Line.

Okay. I get it.

I butt in and basically threw my package over the window.

All 5 kgs. of it.

It worked.

French Women

French women have the reputation of complaining all the time.

Paul told me this.

I experience it with my new French friends.

On Sunday I made a bet with Candice. 1 rupee for every negative comment made.

Within 5 minutes she was down 2 rupees.

Funny how she didn't really talk the rest of the day.

When you meet me.... you learn something about yourself.

The French # 2

The French have weird and crazy keyboards on their computers.

Some of the letters are in different spots.

Everything they touch has fashion and a 'we want to look different' look to it.

I call them sexy yet crazy people.

Sitting and Chai's

The Indians insist on you sitting while you are waiting for whatever you are in their store/shop for.

Sometimes this can be very very annoying.

You can often hear me yelling......."I DON'T WANT TO SIT DOWN!

I do NOT however turn down an offer of FREE chai.

Thought of the Day

By your acts you will be judged.

Building A School

I met these pretty cool guys at my hotel last week.

They were in Jaipur taking a few days to re-energize from their fund raising activities......raise $300,000.00 to build a school in Northern India for street children.

They drove here from England!

Travel People

Just this week alone in my hotel....I've met:
  • A couple from New Zealand living in England...both Doctors....travelling India for a few weeks before going back home to New Zealand.
  • A couple from Texas travelling from volunteering via Africa.....holistic medicine...they just completed a 10 day meditation course (where you don't TALK for the whole time)..I've got them helping out for a few days next week at Ladli :)
  • A couple from the USA travelling around India....students studying medicine.
  • A girl going back to the USA from living one year in Thailand teaching English. Finance major...but now starting a clothing business. She was in Jaipur buying material.
  • A guy from Italy....road manager for some huge singer there. He is on a spiritual quest.
  • A couple from England. She is a yoga instructor. Matt is a chef.
  • A guy from Finland....journalist...doing some weather change reports.
That's just a quick sampling of the different types of people I am meeting.

So cool and so very different than the people I meet in my everyday non travelling life.

I love to travel.

Freaky Storms

We've had some super freaky storms two nights in a row.

They say this is very unusual this time of the year.

Very windy with rain and lighting.

It's also very weird that this journalist from Finland was here at that time.

He told me he was in Jaipur for a few days to interview weather people on climate change.

How bizarre is that timing?

Pretty freaky.

Inspirational Eighty Year Old Traveller

I met this 80 year old lady at my hotel this week.

Una is British and a child psychiatrist in her working years.

She's travelling on her own. Made a quick stop in India before going on to Cambodia and Vietnam. Una just came from Afghanistan.

I had to bring her to Ladli to meet the Director.

Una had a great time with everyone and took tons of pictures on her digital camera.

I saw her later on in the day emailing her family.

Amazing!

Rock Star Status

I've become a little celebrity in the neighbourhood I walk in when going to work.

I take the bus to work and once I get to my stop...which is really just on the side of the road where you need to stop at......I have to cross this super busy street.

As mentioned previously....I'm super scared to cross the street. I usually take some locals arm and cross with them. Sometimes this is not possible. I have to cross on my own.

The first few times I did this, the street ladies that sit on the side of the road selling grass for the first God's offering of food to the cows, just laughed at me. Now they clap when I make it across the street.

I then have a good 10 minute walk on crooked pavement type streets to get to my location. This street goes through a small little neighbourhood.

I pass tied up cows and goats.

I pass dogs.

I pass people brushing their teeth on the street.

I pass little kids screaming and running around with no clothes on.

I pass people just sitting around having chai.

I pass store owners hanging around.

I pass a school for kids.

It's a very busy little area.

Everyone stops what they are doing and looks at me when I walk by. Everyone. Even the animals.

All the little kids scream 'HELLO' 'WHAT IS YOUR NAME?' as I walk by. Everyday. Two times a day. It's all they know how to say. I answer all the time. They also come by to shake my hand.

The older people just stare. They only smile if I'm smiling and say 'namaste' to them. They smile back and respond.

It's pretty cool walking in my oh so not Mr Rogers neighbourhood.

Sixteen Beers

On Thursday night I had invited all the volunteers to come hang out at my hotel as most of them are scattered all over the city.

We met at 6 pm and most left at 1 am.

My rooftop restaurant closes at 11 pm.

No problem as the group was drinking.

Illegal beer at 100 rupees a pop.

Simple India

It's really SATURDAY not Friday like this computer says.

I guess it really doesn't matter.

It just bugs me.

Nothing that simple is simple here.

I Love My Feet

I just had this amazing pedicure last night......AND......my feet are looking FABULOUS!!!

I'm protecting them now. I'm wearing my socks and converse runners.

No more flip flops and walking around barefoot on the dirt.

NO MORE I say!!

I'll have to figure out what I do in India as you need to take off your shoes pretty well everywhere around here and walk barefoot when entering an establishment. Yup.

I'm thinking I'll just buy a pile of socks today and throw them out when they become super dirty.

I'll insist on wearing my feet sock protectors.

My feet are worth it.

Taking Care of Business

It sure takes a super long time to get anything done here.

I've commented on this prior in my blog......but here is another example:

Purchasing material at a fabric shop.
  • I had to take 2 other staff members with me.
  • Once they figured out what I wanted (and I had a sample)....they then had some social time visiting...with of course chai offered.
  • While we waited and waited and waited, they had some 'color' guy come and talk about colors to the 2 Indian folks. I already had picked out the color- so all he had to do was see it...but then of course he waited and waited with us.
  • Finally someone actually went to some back room and got the material to cut for us. 85 meters.
  • The color guy took it with him (the material comes just in cream)
This process took a full 2.5 hours.

I was trying to make small talk with the few words they knew.

I told them that this would of just taken 15 minutes in Canada....AND...I would of gone home with my purchase...not having to come back to pick up what I just bought.

I also added that 'doing business in India is very slow.'

They all laughed and nodded in agreement.

I don't think they have stressed out people in this country.

Like or Love Me

You either like me or love me.

Nothing in between.
