Yelling at People
I really loved Thailand. The people are what made it so extra great!
I must say though that their English really sucks. They seem to only know words a certain way and you can't make a full sentence. It will confuse them. So will action verbs.
I was often saying...."toilet?" "restaurant?" "how much?" My sentences were no more than 3 words at the most.
Porn's english was really bad (my Thai massage teacher) . Her instructions of 'push the feet' really meant 'pull the feet'. I had to explain that push and pull really were very different- especially when giving a massage. She also would comment "tree times"....meaning "three lines". Yup very interesting.
I also had an experience in Bangkok at this travel desk when I asked for an airport bus service. "No- we no do". Hmm.....I was directed there...so thought a bit strange. I turned around and went to the front desk of the hotel....which was right in front of them. I had to wait for a check in and check out. After 15 minutes of waiting I asked the same thing....and the girl pointed back to the travel desk. The travel desk girl was watching me the whole time and when I went back to her and yelled "AIRPORT"....she goes to me..."Yes...we have. Mini Van." I guess van and bus are different when going to the airport.
I'm trying to not yell when I speak to people that don't understand English.
It's very hard....because for some strange reason yelling really does help them understand a bit more than they first understood.
